Along the West Coast

After leaving Abel Tasman and the Nelson area I headed further down south. I had to scrap my plans of hiking in the Nelson Lakes National Park because of the bad weather (we got some heavy rains in the last days). So my first major stop was Westport where I met a local kiwi from Auckland called David who just finished the Heaphy Track (toghether with a bunch of Americans - all soaking wet). The weather was still very bad but promised to be better the next day. So I planned to hike up the mountains in the Paparoa Ranges. The so-called Croesus Track starts from Blackball to Barrytown. Unfortunately the weather was still bad enough. The local DOC office didn't recommend going up there because of heavy rainfalls and snowy conditions above 1000m (the tramp goes up to 1200m).
Instead I went with David to Blackball, bought some tasty salamis there (a speciality there) and had a yummy burger in the Blackball Hilton - a real old-style hotel with an irish-pub like restaurant/pub/cafe. Couldn't resist to try out the local "Miner's Dark". Good stuff.

Also visited the pancake rocks at Punakaiki. The weather was very mixed, sometimes sunny spells, sometimes heavy rains and even hail storms. Still a great sight though. Probably even better than on a sunny day...

Next stop was Hokitika. There's a glow-worm cave which you can visit for free. Also some good walks at the lake nearby, for example the Dorothy Fall - there's a picture of it in my flickr album.

Thursday afternoon I arrived in Franz Josef, a small, touristy village just beside the Southern Alps and in particular the glacier with the same name. I'm staying in a nice Chalet like Hostel. Really nice and clean with a direct view to the glacier... My original plan was to do a guided 1-day walk up the glacier, but the weather forecast wasn't good (showers turning to rain) so I decided to do a heli flight to Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier including a landing on the neve (the top) of the glacier. It was just an amazing sight. Worth every Cent.

Hopefully I can do some more tramping in the next days, such as the Welcome Flat tramp (http://www.tramper.co.nz/index.cfm?view=object&id=245). After that I'm going to head further to Wanaka, then Queenstown and finally the Routeburn Track, which I have booked for the 23rd and 24th of March (next weekend).

Nachdem ich Abel Tasman und die Gegend um Nelson verlassen habe, bin ich weiter Richtung Sueden gefahren. Urspruenglich wollte ich im Nelson Lakes National Park eine mehrtaegige Wanderung machen, habe allerdings meine Plaene geaendert, weil das Wetter so schlecht war (vor einigen Tagen ist das Wetter umgeschwungen und nun sehr herbstlich - und regnerisch). Daher bin ich dann nach Westport weitergefahren, wo ich einen Kiwi aus Auckland kennengelernt habe (David), der gerade den Heaphy Track beendet hat (ein 3-4 taegiger Tramp), zusammen mit ein paar Amerikanern, die alle durchnaesst ankamen. Dort wollte ich in den Paparoa Ranges wandern gehen (den Croesus Track), wo David auch hinwollte. Haette gut gepasst, aber leider war am naechsten Tag das Wetter auch sehr schlecht. Die lokale DOC office hatte Warnungen ausgegeben, dass sehr starke Regenfaelle zu erwarten sind, und auch Schnee ueber 1000m (Der Croesus Track geht bis auf 1200m). Von daher bin ich mit David nach Blackball gefahren, wo man prima Salamis einkaufen kann - eine lokale Spezialitaet dort) und ich einen leckeren Burger im Blackball Hilton gegessen hab, incl. einem Pint "Miners Dark" - ziemlich lecker. Blackball ist ein sehr kleiner Ort, wenige Einwohner und so gut wie keine Touristen. Das Hilton ist ein altes Hotel mit Restaurant/Pub/Cafe, das wie ein Irish Pub aussieht. Sehr angenehm :)

Auf dem Weg bin ich auch bei den beruehmten Pancake Rocks vorbeigefahren, bei Punakaiki. Das Wetter war sehr gemischt - teils sonnig, teils heftiger Regen und sogar einige Hagelstuerme. Die Aussicht war trotzdem unheimlich schoen, vielleicht sogar besser als bei gutem Wetter.

Naechster Stop war Hokitika. Dort gibt's eine Gluehwuermchen-Hoehle, die man kostenlos besuchen kann. In der Naehe gibts auch einige netter kurze Walks und "Sights", wie z.B. der Dorothy-Wasserfall, wovon ich auch ein Bild in meinem Flickr-Album habe.

Donnerstag nachmittags bin ich dann in Franz Josef angekommen, einem kleinen touristischen Oertchen nahe bei den Southern Alps, und direkt neben dem gleichnamigen Gletscher. Ich bin fuer 2 Naechte in einem Hostel, das wie ein Chalet in einem Ski-Ort ist. Superschoen und sauber, mit direktem Ausblick auf den Gletscher... Mein Plan war eigentlich, einen guided 1-day walk auf den Gletscher zu machen, habe aber meine Plaene geaendert, weil die Wettervorhersage nicht so gut war. Stattdessen habe ich heute (Freitag) einen Hubschrauber-Flug mitgemacht, der an dem Franz Josef Gletscher, Mt. Cook und dem Fox Gletscher vorbeiging, incl. einer Landung auf dem Franz Josef Gletscher. Die Aussicht war unglaublich und jeden Cent Wert.

Hoffentlich kann ich in den naechsten Tagen noch ein wenig Wandern, z.B. den Welcome Flat tramp (http://www.tramper.co.nz/index.cfm?view=object&id=245). Danach gehts weiter Richtung Sueden nach Wanaka, dann Queenstown und dann schliesslich zum Routeburn Track, wo ich fuer naechstes Wochenende (23./24.) die Huetten gebucht habe.
